‘…the ocean bed their tomb’

ADS was engaged by the artist to co-design, document, project manage and install this waterborne sculpture. The engineering design was significant given the environment and requirement for the work to appear to hover at the same level above the water, regardless of tide.

35 crew of the AE1 submarine sank in the waters off Papua in 1914. This commemorative sculpture imagines a beautiful wreath of floating twigs and branches colllected at the time.

In sunlight, the polished stainless steel structure shimmers & reflects its image upon the water surface. At night a concealed light source creates a complex optical intrigue of reflections
