Project Description
Golden Rhombohedron (acute)
Jason Sims
Armature were engaged to work in collaboration with Jason Sims on the design and execution of this unique, high quality, robust public artwork. A technically complex project, it required accuracy in fabrication to achieve the desired effect. Its location, including underground services, passing traffic and proximity to Adelaide Casino, also presented challenges.
Drawing on the artist’s gallery practice, this 4.5m outdoor sculpture was designed for precision manufacture to millimetre tolerance and with consideration for extreme weather and temperature changes, condensation, access for maintenance and vandalism.
The design process included a 12-month solar flare animation study to inform the safety of nearby vehicular traffic, as well as a working scale prototype with active HEPA filter ventilation to test for condensation in -10 to 45 degree temperatures. Specialist manufacturing techniques included rotary laser cutting of the stainless-steel pipe and 3D printing of polycarbonate, LED junctions and fan housings.
